Lighten up for the holidays
As the holiday season proceeds in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon transforms into a sparkling wonderland. Whether you’re looking for a family outing, a romantic evening, or a solo stroll to refresh yourself with some holiday cheer, there’s no shortage of Christmas light displays across the state. Here’s a few of the must-see spots for festive illuminations in Oregon.
Portland: The City of Lights
Continuing a Portland tradition, the White Stag sign’s red nose made its debut for the holiday season. The stag’s red nose was officially lit around 4 p.m. on Nov. 27 in Old Town. The sign was erected in 1940 and in 1978, the sign was designated a historic landmark.
In a home-grown display, the West Hills Martini Glass heralds the season as well. The approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) tall, 30 feet (9.1 m) wide sign displays a martini glass with an olive. Anna Griffin of The Oregonian wrote: “Over the years, various people have read various meanings into the oversized and ornately lit martini glass that beams down over Portland each holiday season.
Peacock Lane: A beloved Portland tradition, this charming street in Southeast Portland features historic homes decorated to the nines. From classic nativity scenes to quirky inflatables, each house offers a unique vision. Since the 1920s, each house in this quaint southeast neighborhood has been decorated for Christmas.
The Grotto’s Festival of Lights: Known as the largest Christmas choral festival in the world, The Grotto’s Festival of Lights is a serene and spiritual experience. Walk through the gardens adorned with sparkling lights while enjoying live choral performances in the chapel.
